Activism?

I am all for acting in a responsible manner and changing the future of our kids in their favour. I act accordingly, but I am not outspoken about it, I admit.

But I am against so-called activists spilling gallons of milk in supermarkets, throwing mashed potatoes at art and similar actions. The reasoning behind is understandable, yes I admit that too. Drinking milk is bad for your health and if you do, the farmers are not nearly paid enough for their products. But who has to clean the mess after the activists are escorted by the police? It’s not the corporations who make too much money. In fact, they are happy about the free publicity. No, it’s underpaid and under-insurranced service personnel that has to clean the mess up. And that’s not fair.

Now, maybe I don’t get the real point in any of this, but vandalizing things in order to succeed with a particular goal (or change a particular behavior) rarely impacts the people it should impact. No, it damages the people who are living at the bottom edge of society even more.

It’s a kind of hypocrisy I really despise.

I think, I am doing my part in raising my kids in a way that they respect their environment, they think, spend and act responsibly. And so do I. We try to not hurt or damage anyone and we try to be respectful of different cultures. But damaging things on purpose – vandalism, just to get a reaction, I think that’s wrong and impacts the wrong people too.

Think about it: if you open a box of milk and throw it on the floor in the supermarket; who will clean it up? Not the so-called activists, and not the CEOs either.

You are certainly allowed to disagree, but my blog – my opinions. And isn’t that some kind of hypocrisy in itself?
