ghost in the machine (song review)

I was listening to a lot of music today and as I am writing this, there is still music playing in the background.

I listened to artists like Soen and Agent Fresco, but also Weather Systems. In September 2024 they released their debut album “Ocean Without a Shore”. I listened a lot to it for a while, but in the last six months, I only listened to the song Synaesthesia. Until today. I was in the mood to hear the entire album and so I pulled the beautiful vinyl (it’s blue with black swirls) out of its sleeve and put it on the turntable. Volume up. And off we went. I listened to the songs on vinyl, playing mindlessly on my phone. Until…

Until Ghost in the Machine came on. The song is built around a steady guitar riff that gives it forward momentum. The repetition works well here. It gives the track direction and a clear emotional line. The percussion provides the structure underneath without drawing attention away from the melody. It keeps the tempo and the shape of the song consistent.

The vocal work is one of the strengths. Daniel Cavanagh carries the main vocal line and Soraia Silva’s voice comes in at selected points, not to soften the sound but to expand it. Their voices blend into one atmosphere rather than forming a lead and backing contrast. It gives the song a unified emotional tone.

I knew the song before, of course I did, and I remember that I mentioned it in the album review I wrote as a standout song, but there was something about it that made me pause today, that grabbed my attention differently. There is no dramatic peak. The song does not build toward release. Instead, it fades gradually. A few piano notes close the track and lead directly into Are You There Pt. 2. The transition is subtle and fits the pacing of the album as a whole.

I like when music is layered. It often changes with every listen and also with our moods, I guess. And that is why we can listen to a song 50 times and think we already know it, and then on the 51st listen, it suddenly sounds new.

My song of the day for sure. What do you think? How do you like the song?

I added this video because I mentioned Daniel Cardoso’s drumming and here he plays the full song through.

30 day song challenge 6/30

It’s a bit of a weird time here… I haven’t been sleeping much and last night, I really felt that. I was overwhelmed in a negative way. I was so tired and exhausted… It wasn’t nice. This morning though… I was awake after 4 hours of deep sleep and got ready for work. I even think I did not look all that bad… but maybe I was too tired to judge. Hehe, I took a selfie anyway, and because I am in need of some reassurance and love, I posted it on IG.

But now, let’s get on with why we are here: music

Day 6

A song that makes you want to dance

Milky Chance – living in a haze

This is a song that always gets me moving. Many more songs have the same ability, but this got me dancing through the kitchen an hour ago… So, I guess for me, this was the easiest or most obvious choice today.

It’s never too late to join in on the fun. Notice how I even managed to write “too” correctly? I got so angry with myself when I got it wrong yesterday… urgh! I know those things and I still get them wrong and worst of all, I don’t see it when I am writing…

Bon bref… which songs would you choose? What makes you dance?

30 day song challenge 5/30

another day, another song. You’ve probably seen yesterday’s post advertising myself in a bit of a weird way. I think I need some help there, it’s really not my forte to share my books and successes. Then again, there’s always that voice in the back of my mind telling me that I am overrating myself and my writing, as well as my abilities to share my thoughts in English. I don’t know, I am just very doubting right now and it is not the nicest feeling. I am quite proud of my achievements, but at the same time, since the support is almost non-existent, I worry that I am simply not as good or talented as I thought I am.

anyway… let’s not dwell on that now and get to the music

Day 5

A song that needs to be played loud

Dead Nature – fire in the soul

I follow a couple of people on IG who take part in the challenge too. When an ex-coworker came to day 5 she shared a certain song, and my first thought, which I shared with her was that every song needs (or deserves) to be played loud af. She agreed.

I came across this song on a compilation I heard years ago. Ever since then it has been in my Spotify list and it came on earlier today… I turned the volume up and that’s the reason why I chose this song.

Have a nice Tuesday… It is not to late to join in on the fun. Which songs would you choose? I am curious.

music

And just in case you are wondering what I’ve been listening to lately:

Luke Sital-Singh. And his album “Time is a Riddle”. I found it by sheer coincidence and was taken by it in no time.

This is Luke’s third release, and judging by what I am hearing here, I will like the other albums too, once I get around to listen to them. I am quite happy about this find. It’s been a while since I found a new (new to me) artist like this. If you like Ben Howard, this is for you too. And if you are into comparing artists you are likely to agree that Luke’s voice reminds of Kelly Jones. (Vocalist of the Stereophonics – my first live show of 2018)

Goodnight

And thank you.

xx
