The midnight blue nail polish almost vanished from her toenails. The sand broke bit by bit away. But that’s okay. She is home now and at home, she doesn’t wear sandals. And she doesn’t leave the house without makeup to hide the bad skin on her face. And she doesn’t wear dresses every day when she is at home. Her hair will lose its red shine and her skin will lose the tan faster than she will anticipate. Home is different. Home is laundry and cooking and cleaning and buying groceries. Home is preparing for school to start in one week and getting ready for the new job. Home is not seeing the kids except for meals… summer has gone and reality is back. For now.
